We are experiencing our first online class this week. I am hoping that students will experience our online work from a metacognitive point of view----thinking about our interactions and the learning going on as we go.
The week started with a brief (15 minute) video summarizing our topic for the week as well as assignments for the week. As of Thursday, our discussions are beginning to take shape. I am hopeful that the delicious pieces of the reading discussion will help students connect with specifics from the reading, through their own posts and those of others.
We have two resource discussions this week, so students will have several interaction opportunities. I was pleased with the discussion around Amanda's Zapitalism resource last week and I hope the momentum continues.
I always worry a bit with online classes wondering, "is anybody there?". I look forward to finding a positive answer to that worry!
I will update the blog as the week progresses and I look forward to your comments.
So far I really like the online class and feel that it is working extremely well. The online video gave just enough information and the resource reviews have been great too. I also really enjoyed learning how to use Blogger. It was a site I had never used before but now that I have I feel that I will utilize it much more something and that I would like to integrate it into my classroom.

ReplyDeleteI truly enjoy the flexibility the online class offers. I enjoy reading through my classmates comments, especially about the readings.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I have discovered after hearing the instructions on the pre-writing assignment and with Dr. Thompson's advice via email, that I was not quite detailed enough in the blogging assignment. I've changed things a bit to make my assignments more student-centered!
Hooray! You are there!
ReplyDeleteI thought the online class went really well. It was nice to be able to be at home in that awful blizzard! I just really like how the moodle site for this course is very organized and there are links to everything that we need for that week. I like how there are a lot of resources and examples and I am trying to use and explore them more.
ReplyDeleteI notice that our two resource discussions (Eva on Second Life and Rachel with a comic strip creator) are going very well----we were fortunate to start our online resource reviews with two such interesting and intriguing applications.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy online classes most of my major classes are online. So it felt like a second home! I enjoyed last week class though, it actually felt like I was sitting in class because everything was to the point and explained very clearly. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThe online class was nice, although it was different because you had to take initiative to watch the video and check moodle and all the discussions going on. At first, it seemed a little chaotic because no one is really guiding you through each process, like someone might in a classroom. However, I do feel that just as much was accomplished, or even more, because there was more interactive learning on my part.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm sorry if I have more than one account for this blog. I momentarily forgot the email that I first created. I accidentally went to create 2 more accounts trying to figure out if it was the one I had already created. Technicalities...
I really enjoyed the online portion of the class. I actually felt like I got to know a few people BETTER in our comments back and forth. That sort of communication isn't possible in a strictly classroom setting. The online portion definitely makes the class more meaningful. I also appreciate not having to commute EVERY week. :)
